Next she was hired to help control tsetse fly in the dense bush on the banks of the Zambezi in Zimbabwe. She spent more than a year on Lake Cabora Bassa in Mozambique, monitoring water weeds. Nancy eventually got to Africa on a legal ship. She and a friend tried to hitchhike by boat but the ship they'd selected turned out to be stolen and was boarded by the Coast Guard just outside the Golden Gate Bridge. Restless, again, she decided to visit Africa. When she returned, she moved into a commune in Berkeley, sold newspapers on the street for a while, then got a job in the Entomology department at UC Berkeley and also took courses in Chemistry there. Instead of taking a regular job, she joined the Peace Corps and was sent to India (1963-1965). She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, earning her BA in 1963. She also found time to hang out in the old state prison and the hobo jungle along the banks of the Colorado River. Nancy was born in 1941 in Phoenix and grew up in a hotel on the Arizona-Mexico border where she worked the switchboard at the age of nine. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more-including Krakauer's-in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996 disaster.īy writing Into Thin Air, Krakauer may have hoped to exorcise some of his own demons and lay to rest some of the painful questions that still surround the event. Whilst the majority of my Point Horror collection got relegated to the dusty confines of my parent’s loft (a.k.a attic to Americans) these three books have always remained on my book shelf. I made the transition from Point Horror to more grown-up horror stories such as those by James Herbet and Stephen King at around the age of twelve. I had finally brought over the remainder of my books from my parent’s home, now that my husband had hung the custom shelves, so as I scanned the titles I found myself looking at a fair few books that I have had for a long while. This last week, with Christmas drawing in and the dark nights being especially cold and wet I scanned my (new) bookshelves for something to read. It doesn’t take long for her to put tw0-and-two together. It’s after that night that the scratching starts and the number 396 begins popping up everywhere for Claire. At the end of the tour, when she goes to check on him, he’s gone. Their family can’t afford to refund all the tickets, so Claire begrudgingly agrees to assist for one tour.Īs the night slowly progresses, it seems to be going okay, but then Claire notices a little boy all alone. No one else can do it and he can’t do it himself. Unfortunately, one night her Dad needs her help on the tour. She’s a science-girl at heart and all that supernatural mumbo-jumbo is just not for her. Generally speaking, Claire chooses to distance herself from her Dad’s business. This story follows Claire, whose Dad runs a ghost-themed Chicago bus tour. The thing is, I really want more people to pick this one up. For some reason, even though I absolutely adored this Spooky Middle Grade story, I completely forgot to review it. I read Scritch Scratch in a 24-hour period at the beginning of June. |
